In Y7 pupils currently study either Spanish or Urdu. Classes are all mixed ability. Pupils are taught in the target language and are expected to achieve upto level 4 by the end of Y7. All pupils learn how to listen to, speak, read and write the language they study.

In Y8 & Y9 2 classes respectively are taught as Gifted and Talented. The rest are mixed ability. Lessons are taught in accordance with the KS3 strategy and teachers use a variety of techniques to promote learning - songs, games, smart board, ICT, flashcards & OHP. The course books and associated workbooks are differentiated. Pupils by the end of Y8 have the opportunity to achieve upto a level 5. At the end of Y9 pupils have the opportunity to achieve upto a level 7. All pupils are regularly tested in all 4 skill areas and are aware of their NC level and how to achieve the next level.

Gifted and Talented pupils in Y8 & Y9 are aware of GCSE requirements and are taught as potential GCSE students. Reference is made to the exams and pupils in Y9 do have the opportunity to do GCSE foundation reading and listening papers.

Pupils are also aware of higher order skills. Grammar and tenses are taught thoroughly.

Pupils also have the opportunity to be involved in visits abroad and other language activities organised by the Borough.
