Music

Picture of pupil playing bass guitar Pupils at KS3 follow the QCA schemes of work.

They are assessed on the three components of listening, performing and composition.

In addition, various teaching and learning approaches are utilised to maximise the new approaches in music ICT.

Music Technology room

Image of music ICT class This classroom introduces pupils to ‘cutting edge’ music technology. We are currently using Logic-Pro software with our Apple-Mac operating systems. During our first year, the school took part in the Rotherham schools ‘ICT Celebration week’. This was a huge success! The music personnel continue to explore avenues in developing appropriate ‘music ICT’ based schemes of work.

At key stage 3 pupils follow a curriculum which enables them to be more creative. The study of Rap, Reggae, Gamelan, Pop, Folk, Bhangra, as well as their dance forms and Western Classical music are just some of the areas studies at this key stage. Pupils are given the opportunity to explore by examining their own cultural and social interactive experiences with music.

At key stage 4 pupils currently have the options of; GCSE expressive Arts (AQA) and GCSE music (Edexcel). The curriculum in both instances offers pupils a good basis for studying music beyond the key stage. More pupils are opting for the subject ,  which contribute to a high standard of musicianship throughout the department.

Instrumental Provision

Image of instrumental tuition In addition to classroom teaching, members of staff offer free instrumental lessons as part of their time table. We believe that by having this approach, pupils experience a more varied curriculum. Currently there are 100 pupils benefiting from this in-house service. Our target is to have 10% of the school population playing a musical instrument.

Rotherham music service continue to deliver their peripatetic provision on the following instruments; Brass, Woodwind and Strings. We have recently appointed a piano tutor and are currently seeking ways to offer instruction non-traditional instruments and music ICT.

We hope to offer further developments for our neighbouring communities and schools in making music accessible for all.
